The hiss echoing up from the dark abyss sounded like the breathing of a colossal, buried beast.

Julian scrambled to his feet, his mind racing faster than the three-minute clock ticking down inside his chest. Beneath his ribs, the mechanical cadence felt cold, precise, and utterly relentless.

Tick. Tick. Tick.

«Clara!» Julian sprinted across the blood-slick platform, sliding to his knees beside her. She was shivering violently, her hazel eyes wide with terror as she stared up at him. The corruption was gone from her face, but the skin around her throat was raw and bruised from her own hands.

«Julian…» she choked out, reaching up to grab his forearm. «It’s not over. The purge… it didn’t destroy the mainframe. It just redirected the power.»

«I know,» Julian said, his eyes darting to the central console. The glowing green numbers were already down to 00:02:41. «The baby—we have to get the baby.»

He turned toward the newborn lying on the cold steel floor. The child’s cries were faint now, fading into weak whimpers. Julian scooped the infant into his arms, wrapping it securely inside his jacket. As he pulled the fabric tight, the skin on his wrist brushed the baby’s cheek.

A sharp spark jumped between them.

Julian gasped, staggering back as a sudden flood of memories that weren’t his own slammed into his mind: A barren wasteland under a shattered sky. A laboratory built inside a hollowed-out mountain. A woman’s face—Clara, but decades older—screaming as a glass cylinder filled with blue liquid closed around him.

«Julian, look out!» Clara screamed.

He snapped back to reality just as a metallic cable whipped out from the shadow of the fallen elevator frame. The cable wrapped tightly around Clara’s waist, yanking her off her feet with brutal velocity.

She cried out as she was dragged backward toward the central pedestal.

Julian dropped low, lunging forward with his left arm, catching her outstretched fingers just before she was pulled into the shadowy recess beneath the console. He dug his boots into the grated floor, the extra weight of the baby in his jacket making his balance treacherous.

From the dark beneath the pedestal, a ruined shape hauled itself into the flickering strobe lights.

It was Evelyn.

Her synthetic skin had completely melted away from the flash, leaving behind a terrifying endoskeleton of polished brass, exposed fiber-optics, and twitching hydraulic tubes. Half of her skull was stripped down to a bare steel chassis, her left eye a burning red lens that locked onto Julian with cold, calculated precision.

«Did you really think… a simple wipe drive… could erase thirty generations of design?» Evelyn’s voice came not from a mouth, but from a cracked speaker buried deep inside her ribcage. «You are not the survivor, Julian. You are the catalyst.»

With a sickening crunch, Evelyn’s skeletal arm extended, her brass fingers locking onto Clara’s throat once more. But this time, she wasn’t trying to choke her.

A thick, needle-like probe deployed from Evelyn’s forearm, driving straight into the side of Clara’s neck.

Clara let out a muffled shriek as a brilliant blue fluid was forcibly pumped into her bloodstream. Her eyes rolled back, the veins in her neck bulging and glowing with an eerie, bioluminescent light.

«Stop!» Julian roared, reaching for the fallen blade near his older self’s motionless body. He grabbed the heavy steel hilt, planted his feet, and swung with everything he had.

The edge bit deep into Evelyn’s elbow joint. Sparks rained over the platform as wires snapped and hydraulic fluid sprayed across Julian’s face. Evelyn snarled, a horrible screech of grinding gears, as her damaged arm severed completely, releasing Clara.

Clara collapsed onto the deck, convulsing as the glowing fluid spread beneath her skin.

The countdown in Julian’s chest was accelerating, matching the rapid beat of his rising panic. Deep below them, the rhythmic slamming of hatch doors echoed off the cavern walls. The clones were waking up. Hundreds of thousands of footsteps were beginning to climb the emergency ladders built into the shaft walls.

«Julian…» Clara rasped, her voice layered with an unnatural, resonant resonance that made the steel floor beneath them vibrate. She forced herself up onto her elbows, her skin pale, her pupils dilating into wide, empty rings. «The key… wasn’t the chip…»

«What are you talking about?» Julian knelt beside her, pulling her against his shoulder while keeping a tight grip on the child.

Clara reached up, her trembling fingers touching the center of Julian’s chest, right where the internal clock was ticking.

«The wipe drive didn’t kill the entity,» she whispered, tears of glowing blue fluid spilling down her cheeks. «It transferred the primary core into you. The countdown… isn’t for the clones.»

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He looked down at his chest. Through his shirt, a faint, rhythmic pulse of amber light was beginning to bleed through his skin.

00:00:42

«It’s a detonation sequence,» Clara said, a look of utter horror settling over her features as her mind fought against the overriding code. «When it hits zero… the Vault will be purged by fire. Everything… everyone… erased.»

«No,» Julian muttered, backing away from her, his hand pressed over his glowing sternum. «No, there has to be a manual override. The architect—»

«The architect died three hundred years ago!» Evelyn’s severed head hissed from the floor, her red eye flickering wildly. «You are just the echo of a dead man’s nightmare!»

Julian turned toward the abyss. Up over the edge of the platform, the first pair of hands appeared.

Then another. And another.

Dozens of identical pale faces pushed into the strobe light—clones of himself, their eyes blank, their mouths open in silent, unison screams as they pulled themselves onto the platform.

00:00:15

«Julian, run!» Clara screamed, grabbing the heavy brass control lever on the pedestal and pulling it down with impossible strength.

The emergency brakes on the platform snapped with an explosive crack. The entire floor tipped vertically, dumping Evelyn’s remains and the climbing horde of clones back down into the endless dark.

Julian scrambled, clutching the baby to his chest as he grabbed the edge of the central lift column. Clara jumped toward him, her hand locking around his wrist as the platform fell away completely into the void beneath them.

They hung suspended over the black pit, clinging to a narrow steel ladder built into the core shaft.

00:00:02

00:00:01

00:00:00

The ticking inside Julian’s chest stopped.

A wave of deafening silence washed over the shaft. Julian braced himself, closing his eyes, waiting for the fiery explosion to tear his flesh apart.

Nothing happened.

No fire. No blast.

Slowly, Julian opened his eyes. The glowing amber light beneath his skin had turned a deep, obsidian black.

In the dim light of the red strobes, Clara looked at him, her hazel eyes filled with a profound, terrifying sorrow.

«It didn’t detonate,» she whispered, her voice hollow.

Julian looked down at his hands. The skin on his palms was slowly hardening, turning into a smooth, dark metallic alloy before his very eyes.

A cold, mechanical voice echoed not from the room, but from inside his own head:

PRIMARY CORE FULLY INTEGRATED. WELCOME BACK, ARCHITECT.

Before Julian could scream, the steel ladder beneath their hands violently magnetized, snapping his wrists to the metal structure. High above them, at the very top of the shaft, a massive blast door slammed shut with a thunderous boom, plunging them into absolute, suffocating darkness.

Then, from the darkness right beside his ear, the baby began to speak in a full, adult voice.
