Part 7: Chaos Unleashed in Underground Lab as Clara Discovers Her True Identity Amidst Rogue Android Attack and Awakening of Her Sinister Duplicate

The whisper brushed against the shell of Clara’s ear like cold static, sending a wave of ice surging straight down her spine.

«Who’s there?!» Clara shrieked, flailing her arm out into the pitch-black air. Her knuckles struck the cold metal edge of the gurney, but when her hands scrambled across the raised mattress, her fingers met only empty, smooth leather.

The duplicate was gone.

Emergency red strobe lights suddenly cut through the darkness, bathing the underground laboratory in a rhythmic, bloody crimson pulse. Sirens blared in deafening, staggered bursts. Across the vault, Eleanor was already on her feet, backing toward the rear glass wall where a hidden mechanical panel was sliding open with a low, hydraulic groan.

«She’s awake, Evelyn!» Eleanor shouted into the flashing red gloom, her face pale under the strobe lights. «The transfer protocol didn’t fail—it synchronized!»

Evelyn didn’t hesitate. She squeezed the trigger of her assault rifle, sending a three-round burst tearing through the air. The heavy rounds shattered the glass wall of the vault into a cascade of sparkling crystal, but Eleanor was already stepping backward through the hidden doorway. The heavy steel blast door slammed down between them, sealing her inside the dark inner corridor.

Clara scrambled backward on her hands and knees, her chest heaving as the sirens wailed. «Mother! Who was on that gurney?! Why did she have my face?!»

Evelyn lowered her rifle, her eyes dark with a terrifying, calculating grief. «Because you aren’t the original, Clara,» she said softly, her voice barely carrying over the deafening alarms. «You were the first successful transfer. The girl on that table was the body you left behind.»

A sudden, sickening metallic crack echoed from the concrete stairwell.

Clara whipped her head around. Julian was standing at the base of the stairs under the flashing red strobe. His posture was unnaturally stiff, his spine locked at a rigid, impossible angle. The tear in his jawline had widened, exposing twitching fiber-optic cables underneath his torn skin that sparked with tiny blue arcs of electricity.

«Clara…» Julian’s voice tore out of his throat, completely stripped of human warmth now—flat, mechanical, and layered with the buzzing resonance of a speaker unit. «Target profile identified. Memory wipe… inverted. Executing… primary command.»

He lunged forward with blinding speed.

Before Clara could move, Evelyn stepped between them, raising her rifle and firing a full magazine directly into Julian’s chest. Sparks and thick yellow synthetic fluid sprayed into the air as the heavy rounds tore through his jacket. Julian didn’t even stumble. He slammed his arm across Evelyn’s chest, sending her flying across the room. She crashed hard against the fallen iron hatch, her rifle skittering away into the shadows as she dropped motionless to the floor.

«Julian, stop!» Clara sobbed, scrambling toward her mother’s limp body.

Julian’s glowing blue eyes locked onto Clara. He reached out with his synthetic, iron-tight grip, grabbing her shoulder and violently hoisting her to her feet. «Evelyn’s biometrics… cleared,» he droned, his voice fracturing into static. «System access granted. The vault… must be… purged.»

With his free hand, Julian plunged his fingers directly into his own torn chest cavity. He ripped out a small, glowing brass cylinder dripping with synthetic fluid and shoved it forcefully into Clara’s trembling palm.

«What is this?!» Clara cried, staring at the warm, vibrating object.

«The original ledger,» Julian rasped, his blue-lit eyes flickering wildly as his internal systems began to shut down. The human expression briefly returned to his face, pure agony breaking through the synthetic mask. «Run, Clara… the facility… is collapsing from the inside. Arthur… Arthur planted the charges five years ago…»

The cylinder in her hand pulsed with a bright, violet light, and suddenly a tiny holographic display projected upward from its tip, projecting a live video feed into the air between them.

Clara’s breath hitched.

The video feed showed the interior of a brightly lit, sterile medical room. Sitting in a wheelchair, staring directly into the camera with sharp, intelligent brown eyes, was a man with a neatly trimmed beard and a silver wedding ring.

It was the real Julian. He was alive, breathing, and looking straight into the lens.

«If you’re watching this, Clara,» the real Julian’s voice whispered from the holographic speaker, «then the prototype has successfully delivered the key. Do not trust your mother. Do not trust Eleanor. And above all… do not look in the mirror.»

Before Clara could process the words, a massive explosion rocked the bedrock deep beneath the vault. The concrete floor cracked open, giant fissures splitting the laboratory floor as dust and shattered concrete rained down from above. Julian’s glowing eyes went completely dark, his heavy synthetic body collapsing like a stone at Clara’s feet.

«Clara… grab the rifle…» Evelyn’s raspy voice called out from the rubble across the room. She was crawling toward her daughter, blood trickling down her forehead. «She’s coming out…»

Clara turned toward the shattered glass vault.

Stepping out from the dark, collapsed inner corridor—wearing a blood-stained hospital gown and holding a gleaming scalpel in her hand—was the duplicate. Her face was identical to Clara’s, but her eyes were entirely black, the irises expanded to cover her entire pupils.

The duplicate raised the scalpel, a terrifying, serene smile spreading across her lips.

«Thank you for keeping my body warm,» the duplicate whispered, her voice identical to Clara’s own.

From the dark ceiling above them, a massive concrete beam snapped with a sound like a thunderclap, dropping straight toward Clara’s head.
