The silver key inside Julian’s trousers pocket felt heavier with every step, a cold weight pressing against his thigh like a bullet waiting to be fired. For six months, he had played the dutiful, polished husband in their sunlit, mid-century modern penthouse, masking the rot beneath his midnight-blue denim shirt. But today, the charade ended. Elena had found the ledger—the real one, detailing the offshore accounts holding her family’s stolen millions.

«You think you’re clever, Elena,» Julian whispered, his voice dangerously soft as he backed her into the center of the living room. Warm afternoon sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing around them. Near the deep-emerald velvet sectional, their two-year-old daughter, Maya, sat on the cherry hardwood floor, clutching a wooden block, her dark pigtails swaying as she sensed the sudden shift in oxygen.

Elena’s hand rested protectively over her heavily pregnant belly, her dusty-rose dress straining against her pulse. «It wasn’t an accident, was it?» she breathed, her voice trembling with a terrifying clarity. «My brother’s car crash… you set him up.»

Julian didn’t answer. His amber-brown eyes narrowed into slits. The ledger on the glass coffee table was open to the final page, signed in her late brother’s handwriting. Elena had finally pieced together why Julian had spent five years wooing her: it was never about love, but about dismantling her father’s empire from the inside out.

«He’s coming, Julian,» Elena whispered, her chest heaving beneath her cream cardigan. «I called him before you walked through that door.»

Julian’s face contorted into pure, unbridled rage. He didn’t just lose his temper—he exploded. «Know your limits!» he roared, swinging his palm in a blinding arc.

The crack echoed like a gunshot. The force of the strike spun Elena off her feet. She gasped, instinctively twisting her body mid-fall to cushion her abdomen, crashing hard onto the polished hardwood.

Maya erupted into a piercing, hysterical shriek, throwing her arms into the air, screaming for her mother.

On the floor, Elena clutched her burning, reddened cheek, tears spilling onto the wood. She didn’t look at Julian. She looked directly at the massive mahogany entryway door. «Father! Break it down!» she screamed, her lungs burning.

Heavy, violent thuds instantly rattled the thick wood. Outside in the corridor, a voice like grinding granite boomed: «Unbolt this door now!»

It was Tariq. And he hadn’t come alone. Through the solid mahogany, the terrifying, low-frequency growls of a massive animal vibrated straight through the floorboards.

Elena’s phone lay just inches from her trembling fingers. She reached out, but Julian lunged forward, his black leather shoe slamming down and kicking the device violently beneath the velvet sofa.

«You won’t escape him!» Elena screamed, dragging herself backward along the base of the sofa, her knuckles white as she shielded her unborn child.

«You stay right here!» Julian snarled, stepping over her legs to cut off any path to the foyer. He sprinted to the heavy entryway door, his fingers flying across the digital keypad panel. Beep-beep-beep-click. The deadbolt slammed shut, locking the digital latch just as Tariq’s shoulder slammed into the frame from the outside.

«Touch her and you die!» Tariq’s voice rang through the wood, muffled but deadly.

Julian spun around, his jaw locked. He dropped to his knees beside Elena, clamping his thick hand violently over her mouth to silence her cries, pinning her wrists to the floor. She thrashed frantically, her muffled screams choking in her throat until, with a desperate burst of adrenaline, she bit down on his palm. Julian hissed, releasing her just long enough for Elena to throw herself backward onto the plush emerald sofa, hyperventilating. «Have mercy on us!» she begged, tears blinding her.

CRACK.

The solid mahogany door frame splintered from the center. Webbing fractures tore through the Venetian plaster wall as Tariq hurled his entire weight against the lock from the corridor. Deep, guttural snarls filtered through the widening gap in the wood.

Julian stood frozen beside the sofa, his chest pounding, his arrogant composure finally shattering into pale, paralyzed shock. «Impossible—» he gasped. The door was reinforced steel-core; no man should have been able to crack it.

With an explosive boom, the hinges tore completely free from the wall. The heavy mahogany door crashed flat onto the hardwood floor, sending a cloud of dust into the sunbeams.

Tariq stepped over the ruins of the threshold.

His slicked silver hair was disheveled, his dark leather jacket dusted with plaster, his dark eyes burning with absolute, apocalyptic fury. In his right hand, straining against a thick tactical rope leash, was a hundred-pound black-and-tan Doberman Pinscher. The dog’s chest heaved with heavy panting, its white, sharp fangs fully bared, saliva dripping onto the polished floor.

Tariq took one step into the room, his eyes locking onto Elena’s bruised cheek, then sliding to Julian.

«You laid hands on my blood!» Tariq roared, the sound rattling the glass windows.

Julian backed away, his hand instinctively reaching toward his waistband, but he was far too slow.

Tariq didn’t negotiate. He didn’t hesitate. With a single fluid motion, his thumb thumbed the heavy metallic clip on the leash, snapping it open. He extended his arm, pointing his index finger straight at Julian’s throat.

«Tear him apart!»

The Doberman launched forward in a terrifying blur of muscle and rage. The camera angle of Julian’s vision narrowed to a single, horrifying sight: the dog’s snarl-wrinkled snout filling the air, wild eyes gleaming, razor-sharp teeth opening wide as it lunged directly for his face.

Just before the jaw snapped shut, Tariq didn’t look at Julian. He looked at the bottom of the shattered doorframe—where a small, hidden electronic transmitter, wired directly into Julian’s deadbolt, was flashing a steady, pulsing blue light.

Tariq hadn’t broken the door down with force. He had the bypass code all along. Which meant someone inside the apartment had unlocked it from the inside seconds before he hit it—and it wasn’t Elena.
