Part 8: Carlos confronts his long-lost wife during a high-stakes escape after discovering a deadly betrayal that traps them inside a subterranean bunker

Carlos stared through the rain-streaked windshield, his lungs freezing in his chest. The face staring back at him from the driver’s seat was unmistakable—the high cheekbones, the faint scar across her left brow, the vivid green eyes that had haunted his dreams for twelve long years.

«Elena…» Carlos breathed, the name ripping through his throat like glass.

The driver’s side door swung open. Elena stepped out into the pouring rain, her hand trembling as she reached toward him. «Carlos,» she whispered, her voice choking back a sob. «You have to get in. Now.»

Before Carlos could process the impossible sight of his dead wife, the heavy thump of rotor blades chopped violently through the storm clouds above. A spotlight pierced the darkness of the alley, blinding them in a harsh, glaring white beam.

«Movement on the roof!» Sarah screamed, pointing up.

Julia stood outlined against the raging inferno of the upper floor, a sniper rifle hoisted to her shoulder. She didn’t target Carlos. She aimed straight at the SUV’s front tire.

Crack!

The sharp report of the rifle echoed off the brick walls. The front left tire exploded, the SUV sagging violently to one side.

«In the back! Go!» Mateo roared, shoving Sarah into the middle row and scrambling in after her.

Carlos threw the young boy onto the rear bench and leaped into the passenger side, pulling Elena in with him as another round punched a clean, spiderwebbed hole through the reinforced windshield. Elena slammed the door, slapped the gear shift into drive, and floored the accelerator. The disabled SUV lurched forward, its bare rim shrieking on the wet asphalt as sparks showered into the night.

«She knew,» Elena gasped, wrestling the bucking steering wheel as they tore out of the alley and fishtailed onto the main boulevard. «Julia set the decoy on the roof to flush us into the open. The child’s signal was never coming from his blood—it’s broadcasted from an orbital relay!»

Carlos grabbed Elena’s arm, his mind spinning into chaos. «You died in Geneva! I identified the body!»

«You identified a shell, Carlos!» Elena cried, cutting across three lanes of midnight traffic as police sirens began to wail in the distance. «They forced me to finish the project. They threatened to kill you and Sarah if I didn’t create a perfect biological match to bypass the mainframe lock!»

«A clone?» Sarah asked from the back, her voice barely a whisper as she cradled the unconscious boy. «He’s… my brother?»

«No,» Mateo growled, applying a tight tourniquet to his bleeding shoulder in the seat beside her. «He’s not a clone of Carlos. He’s a vessel. His DNA was altered to carry the decryption keys for every black-budget asset in the hemisphere.»

Suddenly, the heavy steel grill of a massive matte-black transport vehicle rammed into the rear bumper of their SUV. The impact hurled Sarah forward against the seat restraint.

BOOM!

The SUV skidded sideways, tires screeching against the asphalt. Out of the dark side windows, Carlos saw three armed men in unmarked tactical gear raising automatic rifles.

«Duck!» Carlos yelled, pulling Elena down toward the console.

A hail of high-caliber rounds shattered the remaining rear glass, tearing through the headrests. Mateo returned fire through the broken back window, his sidearm barking three times before locking back empty.

«We aren’t going to make it on three tires!» Elena yelled, slamming her foot on the brake.

The heavy transport overshot them, scraping violently against their passenger side before roaring ahead. Elena spun the wheel, sending the battered SUV skidding down a steep off-ramp toward the abandoned subterranean freight tunnels running beneath the harbor.

The pitch-black tunnel swallowed them whole, the roar of their grinding rim echoing loudly off the damp concrete walls. Elena cut the headlights, plunging them into absolute darkness, relying entirely on the dim amber glow of the dashboard.

She brought the vehicle to a sudden stop deep inside the damp cavern.

«We have two minutes before their thermal imaging tracks us down here,» Elena said, her breathing heavy as she turned to face Carlos. Tears welled in her eyes as she reached out, resting a warm hand against his bruised cheek. «I never stopped looking for a way back to you.»

Carlos leaned into her touch for a fleeting second, the sheer relief threatening to break him, before his eyes fell to her collarbone.

Beneath her wet shirt, a faint, rhythmic purple light was pulsing beneath her skin.

Exact same rhythm. Exact same pattern as the child’s.

Carlos went completely rigid. He looked from Elena’s neck to the boy lying in the backseat. The boy’s pulse flickered in precise, synchronized harmony with hers.

«Carlos?» Elena asked softly, her brow furrowing. «What’s wrong?»

«You said they forced you to build the key,» Carlos said slowly, his grip tightening around the hilt of the combat knife at his belt. «Where did you get the genetic base for the boy, Elena?»

Elena froze. The warmth in her eyes instantly vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating stillness.

In the backseat, the unconscious boy’s eyes snapped wide open. They glowed with a brilliant, luminescent purple light.

«He didn’t get it from me,» Elena whispered, her voice dropping an octave, devoid of all emotion. «He got it from her.»

The heavy iron blast doors at both ends of the subterranean tunnel slammed shut with a deafening, hydraulic thud, trapping them inside.

Through the darkness behind the car, a pair of bright red night-vision lenses illuminated. Julia walked out of the shadows, holding a remote detonator in one hand and a radio microphone in the other.

«Phase Two complete,» Julia announced into the radio, her voice echoing through the enclosed space. «The architect has successfully delivered the primary subject.»

Elena didn’t look at Carlos. She reached down, picked up a suppressed weapon from beneath her seat, and pointed it directly at Sarah’s chest.
