The force of the impact blew the heavy steel doors off their hinges, sending a pressure wave through the vault that slammed Alejandro and her back against the floor. Dust and pulverized mortar filled the air, lit only by the flickering amber strobe light.

Through the haze, a towering shadow stepped into the threshold. It wasn’t an armada or a SWAT team. It was a single woman, dressed in a sharp, blood-stained charcoal trench coat, holding a heavy hydraulic breaching ram connected to an industrial pneumatic harness.

«Step away from the desk, Julian,» the woman commanded, her voice terrifyingly steady and identical to the voice that had just spoken over the encrypted radio feed.

It was her mother-in-law.

«Mother,» Julian rasped, taking an instinctive step back, his shotgun raised. «You were supposed to be at the docks. How did you break the magnetic lock?»

«Because I built it,» she replied, unclipping the pneumatic harness and letting the heavy steel ram shatter against the concrete floor. She pulled a silenced automatic pistol from inside her coat. «And because you were foolish enough to bring the microchip’s receiver briefcase into this room. You tracked her here, but I tracked you

The pale stranger underneath the crushed server rack let out a wet, rattling gasp. «She’s… she’s going to clear the archive,» he wheezed, his fingers clawing uselessly at the crushed metal. «She’s going to wipe… the second generation…»

Her mother-in-law fired a single round into the stranger’s chest, instantly silencing him.

She flinched as the body went still, her fingers tightening around the microchip until her skin bled. «You killed him,» she breathed, scrambling backward against the desk. «You killed my father, and now you’re killing everyone who knows the truth!»

«Your father died because he tried to sell you to the highest bidder,» her mother-in-law said coldly, turning the gun toward Julian. «And Julian married you because he thought he could use your DNA to unlock the primary vault in Geneva. Isn’t that right, son?»

Julian’s knuckles turned white on the stock of his shotgun. «She carries the master sequence! Without her, the entire registry is useless! We could have controlled the entire enterprise!»

«You were always short-sighted,» his mother said quietly.

A loud, sharp metallic click echoed through the room.

Alejandro had crawled behind the fallen server rack and surfaced with a heavy iron fire extinguisher. With a furious roar, he drove the cylinder straight into Julian’s ribs. The blow hit with a sickening crack, sending Julian crashing into the desk and knocking the shotgun from his hands.

«Go! Get the chip out of here!» Alejandro yelled, tackling Julian to the ground as the two men began to grapple wildly in the dark.

She didn’t hesitate. She grabbed the red dossier from the desk, clutched the microchip to her chest, and bolted toward the secondary escape hatch behind the generator.

«Stop her!» her mother-in-law shouted, swinging her weapon toward the hatch.

A silenced shot whistled past her ear, shattering the glass wall beside the exit. She lunged through the narrow hatch opening, sliding down a steep, metal emergency chute that spiraled down into the dark bowels of the facility.

She landed hard on a metal catwalk, the cold air smelling sharply of saltwater and diesel fuel. Below her, the dark waters of the underground harbor lapped against a concrete pier where a single speedboat sat idling in the gloom.

Breathless, she pulled the red dossier up to her eyes under the faint green light of the dock emergency lamps. She flipped directly to page forty-two.

The red-stamped text at the bottom didn’t just list the adoption registry—it listed biological parents, dates, and laboratory identification numbers.

Her stomach dropped into a abyss.

At the bottom of the page, listed under Subject 01 — Master Sequence, was her own name. But right next to it, listed under Subject 02 — Secondary Carrier, was another name, stamped with a dark black seal.

Alejandro Vance.

Her head snapped up, a cold horror washing over her. Alejandro hadn’t been assigned to her case by chance. He was part of the experiment. He had known all along.

Footsteps clattered rapidly down the spiral ladder behind her.

She spun around, reaching into her coat for the knife she’d pulled from the desk. Alejandro emerged from the shadows, his shirt torn, blood dripping from a deep gash on his temple, and Julian’s loaded shotgun clutched in his hands.

«I took care of Julian,» Alejandro panted, taking a step toward her. «We have to go. Your mother-in-law’s men are flooding the upper levels.»

«Stay back!» she screamed, holding the red folder up between them. «Page forty-two! You’re one of them! You were never protecting me—you were monitoring me!»

Alejandro stopped in his tracks, his eyes filling with a strange, agonizing pain. He lowered the shotgun slowly. «I didn’t know until three weeks ago, I swear to you. My whole life… my whole career… it was all manufactured to put me in that precinct the night your father was murdered.»

«I don’t believe you!» she cried, backing toward the boat.

«Look at the date on page forty-three,» Alejandro whispered, his voice trembling. «Look at who signed the authorization for our creation.»

With shaking hands, she turned the page.

The signature at the bottom was clean, elegant, and unmistakably familiar. It wasn’t her mother-in-law’s. It wasn’t her father’s.

It was her own signature, dated twenty years ago—written in a handwriting she hadn’t used since she was a child, alongside a photograph of herself looking not a day older than she did right now.

Before she could scream, a heavy thrumming vibrated through the metal catwalk beneath their feet.

The water in the subterranean harbor began to drain rapidly, sucking the boat toward a dark, expanding vortex in the center of the bay. From the middle of the churning water, a massive, pressurized hull began to surface—a dark, unflagged submarine rising from the depths.

The hatch of the submarine hissed open, and a spotlight blinded them from above.

A voice over the vessel’s exterior loudspeaker cut through the roar of the water—a voice that made her heart stop dead in her chest.

«Welcome home, sister,» the voice said.
