The crimson laser dot burned against Carlos’s sternum, unwavering and precise. Overhead, the heavy thrum of the helicopter’s rotor blades beat down on the terrace, kicking up a gale of dust and loose debris that stung their eyes.

Sarah raised her smoking handgun toward the blinding searchlight, her knuckles bone-white. «Dad, is that… mom?»

«Lower the weapon, Sarah,» Carlos ordered, his voice tight as he pushed both Sarah and the boy behind his body. He kept his hands raised high, the harsh beam washing over his face. «Julia? You died six years ago. I held your hand in that hospice room.»

A laugh crackled through the harness speaker, bitter and devoid of warmth. «You held a body, Carlos. A carefully staged asset swap while I secured the primary cipher keys. You were always so easily blinded by grief.»

The side door of the low-hovering helicopter slid open. A sleek, armored figure leaned out, holding a high-caliber rifle fitted with a laser designator. Beside the shooter stood a woman draped in an immaculate gray trench coat, her hair cropped short, her sharp features instantly recognizable beneath the harsh glare of the searchlight.

The boy clutched Carlos’s shirt from behind, his knuckles white. «She’s the one who gave me the vest,» he whispered, his voice trembling with a sudden, devastating realization. «She told me if I played along, I’d finally meet my real father.»

«You did meet him, kid,» Carlos gritted through his teeth, his mind racing. «Julia, take whatever was in the vaults. Just pull the target off my chest and let the kids step into the elevator.»

«Oh, Carlos,» Julia’s voice called out over the helicopter’s external PA system, cutting through the thunderous roar of the rotors. «You still don’t understand the board state. The vaults weren’t filled with wealth. They were filled with the original genetic sequences of every executive in the syndicate—including yours. And Marcus wasn’t working against me. He was driving you right into position.»

A sudden, jarring thud echoed from the shattered glass balustrade at the edge of the terrace.

Carlos’s eyes flicked toward the drop-off. A blood-soaked hand shot up from the ledge, gripping the steel railing with violent strength. Marcus, his shoulder shredded by Sarah’s bullet, hauled himself back onto the concrete deck, his face twisted in a hideous, crimson-stained grin. In his left hand, he held a sleek, thumb-sized detonator.

«Did you really think four hundred feet was enough to stop me, Carlos?» Marcus snarled, coughing up blood as he struggled to his feet. «Julia, I have the master bridge! Blow the terrace now!»

«Marcus, you fool—» Julia shouted over the PA system.

Before she could finish, Marcus slammed his thumb down on the detonator switch.

A violent concussion rocked the floor beneath them. Rather than blowing the rooftop to pieces, a series of heavy pneumatic locks fired inside the elevator shaft. The heavy steel fire doors slammed shut, completely sealing the rooftop exit, while the structural pillars supporting the glass terrace began to groan under a sudden, massive hydraulic pressure.

The digital timer on the boy’s vest suddenly blared back to life, skipping entirely past the disarmed state and instantly flashing three red zeros: 00:05… 00:04… 00:03…

«It was a double-blind circuit!» Sarah screamed, lunging for her father as the terrace deck tilted wildly beneath their feet. «The master bridge inverted the disarm code!»

«Get to the edge!» Carlos roared, grabbing the boy by his collar and shoving Sarah toward the outer perimeter just as the central terrace deck buckled upward in a spray of concrete and twisted rebar.

Marcus lunged forward, charging Carlos with blind fury, but the shifting floor gave way beneath his boots. With a sickening snap, the concrete slab beneath Marcus collapsed entirely, swallowing him into the dark, churning abyss of the collapsing upper floor.

Carlos hurled himself across the gap, catching the lip of the outer structural beam with his left hand while hooking his right arm around the boy. Sarah tumbled onto the narrow ledge beside him, her fingers digging into the steel framing as the entire middle section of the roof plunged inward.

Above them, the helicopter veered sharply as the shockwave rattled its frame, its searchlight sweeping wildly across the destruction.

Julia leaned out of the open cabin bay, her eyes locked onto Carlos hanging over the abyss. «You always were impossible to kill,» she shouted, her voice echoing over the roar of the wind. She reached into her coat and pulled out a small, metallic cylinder, tossing it casually into the ruined pit below them. «Consider that a keepsake from the lab.»

The cylinder clicked as it struck the twisted metal fragments, emitting a high-pitched, harmonic whine that made Carlos’s teeth ache.

The boy gasped, clutching his head in agony as his eyes rolled back, blood beginning to trickle from his nose. «The frequency…» he gasped, his body going completely limp in Carlos’s grip. «It’s… overriding the chip…»

«Hold on to me!» Carlos barked, his fingers slipping against the slick metal beam as the weight of the boy pulled him downward. «Sarah, grab his harness!»

Sarah reached out, clamping both hands onto the top strap of the vest, her arms shaking violently under the strain. «I’ve got him! Dad, look at his wrist!»

Carlos glanced down at the boy’s exposed forearm. The scarred skin where the tracking tattoo sat was glowing a dull, luminescent purple under the harmonic pitch. Beneath the flesh, tiny mechanical micro-filaments were visibly shifting, crawling up toward his elbow like spiderwebs beneath his skin.

«He isn’t just a clone,» Sarah whispered, her face draining of all color. «Dad, he’s a biological key. Julia didn’t come here to steal the genetic data from the vault—she used the boy to upload it directly into his bloodstream!»

The helicopter banked hard, aligning its belly with the outer ledge. A heavy steel cable dropped from the winch, snapping taut just inches from where Carlos hung.

«Last chance, Carlos!» Julia called down through a megaphone, her cold face framed by the dark sky. «Step onto the hook with the boy, and I’ll let Sarah walk away. Leave him, and I press the trigger on the micro-filaments. His nervous system will liquefy in five seconds.»

Carlos looked up at the woman he had loved for two decades, then down at the unconscious boy whose life hung in the balance, and finally at Sarah, whose tears were cutting clean tracks through the dust on her cheeks.

«Don’t do it, Dad,» Sarah begged, raising her weapon with a hand that had suddenly stopped shaking. «If you go with her, none of us survive this.»

«I don’t have a choice,» Carlos said quietly. He hooked his arm tighter around the boy and lunged toward the dangling steel cable, his hand closing around the cold iron loop.

The cable instantly jerked upward, yanking Carlos and the boy into the open sky just as a high-powered rifle shot shattered the concrete where Carlos had been clinging a second before.

Sarah scrambled to the edge, watching in horror as the helicopter hauled her father and the boy into its dark bay.

As the side door began to slide shut, Carlos locked eyes with Sarah from forty feet in the air. He reached into his jacket, pulled out a small, silver thumb drive he had lifted from Mateo’s pocket during the struggle, and tossed it into the open air.

It tumbled through the wind, landing with a sharp clink right at Sarah’s feet.

Through the closing gap of the helicopter door, Carlos saw Julia smile—a terrifyingly triumphant expression. But before the latch clicked home, Julia suddenly stiffened. A dark, crimson stain blossomed across the front of her gray coat from behind, and she pitched forward onto the floor of the cabin.

Standing inside the helicopter behind her, holding a suppressed pistol, was Mateo.

He met Carlos’s shocked gaze with a terrifyingly calm expression, raised two fingers to his forehead in a slow salute, and pulled the emergency release lever on the winch line.
