The red digital display on the desk ticked down with agonizing precision: 00:28… 00:27…

Alejandro threw his shoulder against the reinforced steel door, the impact shuddering through his body, but the slab of metal didn’t yield an inch. «It’s magnetic double-deadbolted,» he growled, drawing his sidearm and aiming at the keypad beside the frame.

«Don’t!» she shouted, her hand shooting out to grab his wrist. «If that’s a sealed circuit, blowing the lock will trigger the vault’s containment protocol!»

00:19… 00:18…

Her eyes darted wildly across the leather-bound journal. Beneath her father’s handwritten warning lay a faint watermark pressed into the parchment—a stylized geometric crest depicting a raven encircled by three interlocking rings. It was the exact symbol engraved on the brass key she was still clutching in her left hand.

«The timer isn’t a bomb,» she realized, the truth hitting her like a physical blow. She slammed the brass key into a narrow slit concealed along the side of the steel desk, right below the digital screen.

00:03… 00:02… 00:01…

The red numbers froze at zero. A deep pneumatic hiss echoed through the subterranean chamber as the server racks lining the stone walls hummed to life. The glowing blue LED panels shifted to a harsh, blinding crimson.

Alejandro lowered his weapon, his breath ragged. «What did you just activate?»

Before she could answer, the glass display case behind the desk clicked open. Inside sat a pristine velvet box alongside a stack of classified government dossiers stamped with her late father’s personal seal. She reached inside the case, pulling out the top folder. The first page contained a crisp black-and-white photograph of her husband standing beside her mother—taken three years before she had even met him.

«They didn’t just target me after the wedding,» she whispered, her fingers trembling as she turned the page. «My whole life… my marriage, the accident on the bridge, even my medical treatment… it was all orchestrated by her from the start.»

«Why?» Alejandro asked, stepping closer to inspect the dossier. «Your father was a philanthropist. Why would your mother build a subterranean surveillance hub beneath a sacred chapel?»

«Because she isn’t my mother,» she said, her voice dropping into a deadly calm as the final line of her father’s journal burned in her mind. «And my father didn’t die in an illness fifteen years ago. He was murdered.»

A sudden metallic clatter echoed from above. The heavy iron grate at the top of the stone stairs crashed shut, followed immediately by the dull thud of heavy boots descending into the darkness.

Alejandro spun around, raising his weapon and shielding her behind his back. «Someone followed us down.»

«It’s not the guards,» she murmured, watching the top of the staircase where the beam of a flashlight pierced the shadow.

A tall man stepped into the ambient glow of the red vault lights. He wore a sharp tailored suit, his face pale and sharp, a thin scar running from his temple to his jaw line. He held a silenced pistol casually at his side, but what made her blood run cold wasn’t the weapon—it was his face.

It was the boy from the alleyway. The child who had given her the brass key less than an hour ago had aged thirty years in the span of a single afternoon.

«You took your time, little sister,» the man said, his voice smooth, resonant, and dripping with cruel amusement.

She took a step back, her heels striking the cold concrete floor. «Sister? What are you talking about? Who are you?»

«I am the child they hid away while they raised you in luxury,» he said, taking a deliberate step toward them. «The child they broken so you could play the fragile heiress. You think that key belonged to your father? It belonged to us

Alejandro squeezed the trigger, firing a warning shot that chipped the stone wall an inch from the stranger’s ear. «One more step and I put a round through your chest.»

The man didn’t even flinch. He merely smiled, raising his left hand to reveal a small detonator tucked into his palm. «Shoot me, guard dog, and the explosives rigged to the chapel’s foundation will drop this entire cliff into the ocean. We all drown together.»

Tension stretched thin in the room, thick with the smell of ozone, rust, and impending violence.

«What do you want?» she demanded, stepping out from behind Alejandro to face the man directly.

«I don’t want the money, and I don’t care about your fake mother,» he said, his eyes glinting with unhinged malice as he gestured to the leather-bound journal on the desk. «I came for what’s hidden inside the back cover. The real reason our father was killed.»

She slowly glanced down at the open journal resting beside her hand. With a quick, subtle movement, she slid her fingernail into the thick leather binding, feeling a hard, flat metal chip embedded inside.

«Give it to me,» the man ordered, taking another step forward and raising his weapon toward Alejandro’s head. «Or his blood is on your hands.»

She ripped the microchip from the leather and held it high between two fingers. «Take one more step, and I swallow it.»

The man’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, murderous glare. He tightened his grip on the detonator.

Suddenly, the overhead speakers crackled to life once more, but this time, it wasn’t her mother’s voice that filled the room. It was the frantic, terrified voice of her husband, pleading for his life over a choppy radio feed.

«Please!» her husband screamed through the speaker, the sound of wind whipping through the signal. «Don’t jump! She’s down in the vault! She knows everything!»

A second later, a loud gunshot echoed through the speaker, followed by absolute silence.

The stranger’s eyes widened in genuine shock, his composure breaking for the first time. «No… that wasn’t supposed to happen.»

Before anyone could move, the vault’s main power grid suddenly cut out completely, plunging the underground room into total, suffocating darkness—and from the darkness above the stairs came the sound of heavy, rhythmic footsteps descending fast.
