The suffocating darkness fell like a heavy lead curtain, illuminated only by the frantic crimson strobing of the emergency ceiling lights.

Elena screamed as another brutal contraction tore through her abdomen, forcing her down onto her knees amidst the jagged shards of glass. Through the hazy red glare, she watched Tariq slump against the wall, clutching his bleeding shoulder while Maya shrieked in terror on the hardwood floor just inches away from the agitated Doberman.

«Sophia, what did you do?!» Julian shouted from the dark, his voice cracked with absolute hysteria. He was scrambling backward, his bloody hands slipping on the wet floor. «You compromised the master mainframe! That’s the bio-hazard lockout!»

«Quiet!» Sophia’s voice cut through the dark, icy and unbothered, though the faint rustle of her suit suggested she was moving quickly toward the fireplace. «The ledger is all that matters. Father’s little insurance policy ends today.»

Elena dragged herself across the shattered room toward her crying child, completely ignoring the fiery agony tearing through her lower back. «Maya… come to Mommy…» she sobbed, stretching her blood-stained fingers toward the girl.

Before her fingers could brush Maya’s small shoulder, a blinding white flashlight beam cut through the red gloom, pinning Elena in its glare.

It wasn’t Sophia holding the light.

It was Tariq.

He was standing upright, his face pale from blood loss, but in his uninjured right hand, he held a dark metal cylinder—a heavy-duty gas mask. With a brutal, swift movement, he didn’t put it on himself. He dropped to one knee and strapped the small, pediatric oxygen mask he drew from his coat over little Maya’s face, pulling the straps tight over her curls.

«Father… please…» Elena gasped, her breath coming in ragged, painful hitches as the air in the room suddenly grew sweet and sickly thick. A faint hiss echoed from the ceiling vents.

«Listen to me, Elena,» Tariq hissed, leaning over her, his eyes burning with a desperate, terrifying clarity. «Sophia isn’t your sister.»

Elena’s heart froze. «What…?»

«The girl who died twenty-six years ago was my real daughter,» Tariq whispered, his voice trembling as he shoved the adult gas mask into Elena’s hands. «The woman standing by the hearth… is the lead operative for the Syndicate that bought Julian five years ago. They cloned her DNA from the Zurich lab records. She is here to wipe us all out.»

A cold sweat broke out across Elena’s skin. She looked over her shoulder into the shadows. Through the fog of the entering gas, she saw Sophia standing near the marble hearth, holding up the black leather ledger. But Sophia wasn’t looking at the pages. She was pulling a small glass vial from her breast pocket, unscrewing the cap, and pouring a clear liquid directly over the blood-stained pages.

«You’re lying!» Julian screamed from the corner, choking violently as he inhaled the sweet air. He was crawling toward Sophia on his hands and knees. «Sophia, tell him he’s lying! We had a deal! You said we were taking the money and leaving the country together!»

Sophia turned her scarred face toward Julian, offering him a sad, beautiful smile that didn’t reach her lifeless eyes. «Oh, Julian,» she cooed softly, her voice echoing over the loud hissing of the vents. «You really were the easiest fool I ever recruited.»

She struck a metal lighter.

A sudden, roaring sheet of blue flame erupted from the ledger, instantly illuminating the entire room in a blinding inferno.

«No!» Tariq roared, lunging forward despite his shattered shoulder.

At that exact second, the heavy steel storm shutter covering the main balcony window didn’t just open—it shattered violently inward with a deafening explosion.

A high-tension tactical cable snapped into the center of the room, sending concrete dust and glass flying through the air. A tall, heavily armed figure clad in pitch-black combat gear swung through the ruined window, landing silently on the burning hardwood floor.

The stranger brought up an assault rifle, the red laser dot pinning itself directly onto Sophia’s chest.

«Drop the weapon,» a deep, distorted voice growled through a tactical helmet speaker.

Elena gasped through her mask, her eyes widening in absolute horror as the stranger reached up with one gloved hand and pulled off the helmet, revealing a face covered in old burn scars.

It was Leo. Her brother, who had been buried in the family plot three years ago.

«Hello, Dad,» Leo said, his voice dripping with venom as he kept his gun trained on the fake Sophia. «Did you really think a fiery car crash was enough to burn away what you made me do?»

Before anyone could react, the smart-glass panel on the far wall flared brightly, and the electronic voice barked again: Gas Density Critical. Emergency Vault Lock Engagement in Ten Seconds.

A massive, six-inch-thick iron blast door began sliding down from the ceiling, threatening to seal the entire floor off forever.

Suddenly, Julian jumped up from the floor with a wild, desperate scream, pulling a concealed razor blade from his sleeve, and lunged straight for Elena’s exposed throat.
