The gold leaf ceiling of the Lisbon penthouse reflected a setting sun that looked like spilled blood, but inside, the chill had nothing to do with the evening air. Elena stood by the panoramic glass, her knuckles white as she gripped the brass frame of the bassinet. Beneath the pale-blue fleece blanket, newborn Leo slept—oblivious to the unspoken war that had been suffocating this home for months.

Elena knew the storm was coming. She had spent weeks quietly moving small amounts of money into an undisclosed account, hiding the medical records, and ignoring the sharp, predatory stares of her mother-in-law, Victoria. Victoria hadn’t built a billion-euro real estate empire by being soft. She ruled the family with absolute authority, and to Victoria, Elena was nothing more than an opportunistic outsider who had seduced her heir, Mateo. But Elena wasn’t fighting for money; she was fighting for her son’s life.

A heavy wooden door clicked open in the grand entryway. Footsteps echoed across the polished white marble—sharp, rhythmic, and ruthless.

«Did you really think I wouldn’t find out, Elena?» Victoria’s voice cut through the stillness like a razor.

Elena turned slowly. Victoria stood dressed in a impeccably tailored crimson-red silk blazer, her platinum-blonde pixie cut framing features carved from stone. The heavy emerald pendant at her neck caught the dying light, gleaming like a reptilian eye.

«I don’t know what you’re talking about,» Elena said, her voice trembling despite her best efforts. She instinctively stepped back, placing herself between Victoria and the bassinet.

«The DNA facility in Porto,» Victoria purred, stepping deeper into the room. Her eyes were cold, hollowed out by a terrifying suspicion. «My contact called me twenty minutes ago. Someone requested an expedited paternal test using Mateo’s samples. You are trying to prove he isn’t the father. You are trying to destroy my family’s legacy!»

«That’s not what I’m doing—»

«Liar!»

Before Elena could scream, Victoria closed the distance with terrifying speed. Her crimson sleeve was a blur as she reached out, violently yanking Elena’s blonde side braid from behind. The sudden force whipped Elena backward, her spine slamming into the bassinet’s brass edge. She gasped in agony, her nails digging into the metal netting as she tried to keep her balance.

«You betrayed our family!» Victoria snarled into her ear, her breath smelling of expensive gin and ash.

Without giving her a second to recover, Victoria grabbed Elena by the arms of her oversized sweater, dragging her away from the baby and viciously throwing her to the floor. Elena landed hard, her shoulder taking the impact against the unforgiving marble.

«Leave this house forever!» Victoria barked, towering over her like a vengeful deity.

Suddenly, the grand archway doors swung open with a deafening crash. Mateo burst into the living room, his navy-blue shirt unbuttoned at the collar, sweat glistening on his forehead. He took in the sight of his wife bleeding on the floor and his mother standing over her, and a feral, desperate howl escaped his chest.

«Unclutched your hands from her!» Mateo screamed, his voice cracking with pure fury.

He didn’t hesitate. Rushing forward, Mateo slammed both hands into his mother’s shoulders. The momentum sent Victoria flying backward; her back slammed into the dark-walnut bookcase with a horrific thud-crack before she crumpled onto the terracotta rug.

«Cross this threshold again and pay!» Mateo roared, his chest heaving as he dropped to his knees beside Elena.

In the bassinet, the sudden violent racket finally shattered little Leo’s sleep. The infant let out a piercing, helpless wail that filled the vast, chaotic room.

«Mateo… the baby…» Elena sobbed, shivering uncontrollably as her husband wrapped his strong arms around her, shielding her body with his own. «She knows… Mateo, she found out about the clinic…»

Mateo froze, his eyes widening in sudden, paralyzing fear. He looked at Elena, not with anger, but with a horrifying realization that made his skin turn ash-white. «She knows?» he whispered.

Behind them, a low metallic clatter sounded against the dark wood of the bookcase.

Victoria wasn’t done. Scrambling on the floor, her crimson blazer stained with dust, her hand wrapped around a heavy, solid bronze abstract statuette on the bottom display shelf. Her face was twisted into a mask of unhinged, feral betrayal. She didn’t see her son; she saw a traitor who had turned against his own blood.

Lurching upward from the shadows, Victoria swung the bronze weapon with all the strength left in her body.

CRUNCH.

The dull, horrific sound of metal colliding with bone echoed through the penthouse. Mateo let out a strangled cry of agony, his eyes rolling back as he collapsed sideways onto the marble, dark crimson blood immediately pooling beneath his dark hair.

The heavy statuette slipped from Victoria’s trembling fingers, crashing down onto the rug alongside a glass vase that shattered into a thousand sparkling shards.

Silence descended, heavy and suffocating, broken only by the baby’s frantic cries.

Victoria stood frozen over her son’s dazed, bleeding body. She stared down at her trembling, blood-stained hands, the adrenaline fading to reveal a sudden, overwhelming abyss of terror. The mask of the ruthless matriarch shattered.

«What monster have I become?!» she gasped, hyperventilating as the horror of her action choked her.

Panic took over. Fearing the police, fearing the end of her empire, Victoria turned her back on her dying son. Her heels skidded on the marble as she scrambled blindly toward the grand entryway, her footsteps echoing down the long, empty corridor like gunshots.

Outside in the hallway, she paused for one fraction of a second, glancing back through the archway. Golden hour sunlight streamed through the panoramic windows, illuminating the destruction—the broken glass, her son motionless in a pool of blood, and Elena kneeling beside him.

Elena pulled Leo out of the bassinet, clutching the crying infant tightly to her chest. Tears streamed down her face, mixed with the dust and sweat of the struggle, as she rocked her baby over her husband’s unconscious body.

Victoria fled into the dark, but as Elena held her child, she didn’t just weep for Mateo. She looked down at her husband’s pale face, then at the baby in her arms, and whispered a terrifying truth into the quiet room.

«Forgive me, Mateo,» Elena sobbed, her voice trembling with a secret that went far deeper than Victoria ever imagined. «She was right… you aren’t his father. But neither is anyone else in your family.»

From the coat pocket of Mateo’s discarded jacket on the floor, a cell phone suddenly lit up. The screen displayed a single incoming text message from an unknown, encrypted number:

The trade is complete. The real heir is secure in London. Now kill the child in the penthouse.
