Elena’s breath hitched in her throat, the world tilting precariously as the words burned into her retinas. He isn’t Lucas’s.

The infant’s wails vibrated against her collarbone, a sharp, piercing sound that suddenly felt entirely foreign. She stared down at the small face tucked against her shoulder, searching for the dimple in his chin she had always convinced herself belonged to Lucas—a dimple that now felt like a terrifying illusion. Before her brain could process the magnitude of the lie, the screen flickered again. The caller ID on the active line didn’t show a name, but a location trace: 3.2 miles away. Moving fast.

A low, rattling sound pulled her attention back to the marble floor. Lucas stirred. His eyelids fluttered, heavy and dark with pain, his lips parting in a fractured whisper. «Elena… the baby… is he safe?»

She shoved the burning, lit phone deep into her own coat pocket just as his hand blindly reached out, his knuckles brushing her knee. «He’s fine, Lucas. Hold still, please—you’re bleeding.»

«I… I heard the glass break earlier,» Lucas choked out, a thin red streak trailing from his hairline down to his jawline. «Before I came in… my mother… she knew about the vault in Geneva. She told me… she told me you traded the deeds…»

Elena froze, her hand hovering over his shoulder. The air in the penthouse instantly crystallized into pure poison. «What did you say?»

«She showed me the bank transfers, Elena!» Lucas’s voice cracked, a sudden wave of frantic energy surging through his broken body as he forced his eyes open, bloodshot and pleading. «Ten million… transferred to a private account in your maiden name yesterday! Tell me it’s a setup. Tell me she forged it!»

The silence between them stretched, thick and suffocating. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the low wail of distant sirens began to cut through the quiet Yerevan dusk, rising from the avenue below like an approaching storm.

Elena slowly pulled her hand back from his face. She didn’t deny it. She couldn’t.

«Lucas,» she whispered, her voice stripped of all emotion, cold and clinical. «You need to lay still.»

«You did it,» he gasped, horror eclipsing the physical agony of his fractured skull. Tears welled in his dark eyes, cutting clean tracks through the dust on his cheeks. «The poison… the deeds… the money… it was all you.»

«You never looked at the medical records, did you?» Elena said quietly, standing up with tiny Leo held firmly in her arms. She stepped back, out of his reach. «You were so busy protecting your mother’s legacy that you never asked why the baby was born three weeks early.»

Lucas reached for her ankle, his fingers missing the hem of her jeans by mere inches as he groaned, struggling to push his upper body off the bloody rug. «Elena… don’t… don’t take him…»

A loud, violent bang echoed from the grand entrance down the hall. Heavy, rhythmic footsteps shattered the silence—not the polished heels of Helena, but the harsh, steel-toed march of heavy tactical boots.

«State Police! Clear the corridor!» a voice boomed through the open archway.

Elena didn’t look back at her bleeding husband. She pivoted toward the floor-to-ceiling panoramic window overlooking the city square. Embedded in the sleek aluminum frame was a hidden service access door—a private fire escape designed for VIP evacuations that she had paid three hundred thousand dollars to retrofitting months ago.

She slammed her palm against the hidden sensor. The wall clicked, sliding open three inches to reveal a narrow, dimly lit metal staircase winding down into the dark abyss of the building’s service spine.

«Elena!» Lucas screamed from the floor, his voice cracking with utter betrayal as he dragged his limp lower body across the terracotta rug toward her. «Where are you going?!»

She slipped inside the narrow passage, the heavy soundproof door automatically sliding shut behind her, sealing out his desperate cries and the incoming sound of shouting officers breaking into the main foyer.

The air in the stairwell was cold and smelled of ozone and concrete. Down below, the dull thrum of the building’s massive air conditioning units echoed continuously. Holding the quiet baby tight against her chest, Elena pulled out the unlisted phone from her pocket with her free hand.

The screen was still live. The call was still connected.

She pressed the device to her ear, her boots echoing softly as she descended the steel steps two at a time. «I’m in the chute,» she said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. «Where is the car?»

A dark, deep voice spoke through the speaker, accompanied by the low hum of a high-performance engine idling in an underground garage.

«The car is waiting at the south basement loading dock,» the man replied. «But you need to hurry, Elena. Helena didn’t run to save herself.»

Elena slowed her pace slightly, her heart slamming against her ribs. «What do you mean?»

«She didn’t hit Lucas because of the money,» the voice murmured softly over the static. «She hit him because she found out who I am. And right now, she’s sitting in the back of my car.»
