Parte 2: A tense family confrontation inside a luxury Lisbon penthouse escalates into a deadly fire after a cruel mother-in-law frames her daughter-in-law and attacks her own son
The golden hour light poured through the panoramic glass windows of the Lisbon penthouse, casting a warm amber glow over the polished marble floor. To anyone standing outside, the apartment was a picture of absolute perfection, a sanctuary of wealth and refined taste overlooking the Tagus River. But inside, the air was thick with a suffocating, silent malice that had been building for months.
Elena stood frozen near the brass bassinet, her hand trembling as she touched the soft pastel blanket covering her three-month-old son, Mateo. Across the room stood Victoria, her mother-in-law, immaculate in her emerald-green velvet blazer, her sharp platinum pixie cut gleaming under the chandelier. Victoria had arrived unannounced, just as she always did when her son was out of the house.
«He doesn’t look like a Vasconcelos, Elena,» Victoria said smoothly, her voice laced with venom as she took a slow step forward. «He has your cheap, common features. I warned Tomas that marrying a penniless orphan from the North would destroy our family legacy, but he was blinded by your pathetic tears.»
Elena swallowed hard, her chestnut hair falling forward as she backed away. «Tomas loves me, Victoria. And Mateo is his son. You have no right to come into our home and say these things.»
Victoria laughed—a cold, metallic sound that sent a chill down Elena’s spine. «Our home? You think this penthouse belongs to you? Every square inch of marble, every piece of art was bought with Vasconcelos money. Money that you are secretly transferring out of the country.»
Elena gasped, her eyes widening in disbelief. «What are you talking about? I haven’t taken a single cent!»
«Lie all you want, my dear,» Victoria sneered, closing the distance between them until she was inches away. «I spent the morning with our family lawyers. The offshore transfers bear your digital signature. By tomorrow morning, the police will have the audit records. You will spend the next decade behind bars, and Mateo will grow up calling another woman mother.»
«You forged those documents!» Elena cried out, the horrifying truth dawning on her. «You set me up!»
Victoria’s gaze turned dead and predatory. Before Elena could react, Victoria’s hand shot forward, violently grabbing Elena by her long chestnut hair from behind and yanking her backward. Elena shrieked in agony, her nails clutching the edge of the brass bassinet to keep from collapsing as her skull burned with pain.
«You poisonous leech! You ruined us!» Victoria hissed into her ear, pulling harder.
«Let me go!» Elena gasped, tears spilling down her cheeks.
With a surge of manic strength, Victoria shoved Elena downward, dragging her by the arm and throwing her forcefully onto the hard marble floor. Elena hit the stone with a sickening thud, the breath knocked completely out of her lungs as fabric tore around her shoulder.
Before Victoria could step toward the bassinet, the grand entry archway rattled as the double doors burst open.
Tomas stood in the doorway, his crisp navy-blue shirt damp with sweat, his face contorted in pure, unadulterated outrage. He had sprinted up the stairs after receiving Elena’s panicked text message ten minutes prior. Seeing his mother looming over his bruised wife on the floor broke something fundamental inside him.
«Unclip your venomous hands from her!» Tomas roared, his voice echoing off the mahogany-paneled walls.
Victoria spun around, her eyes widening in surprise, but before she could speak, Tomas charged across the room with explosive speed. He slammed into his mother with full force, shoving her away from his wife. Victoria flew backward through the air, crashing violently into the tall dark-walnut display bookcase before slamming hard onto the marble floor.
«Touch her again and face ruthless judgment!» Tomas screamed, his body shaking with fury as he stood over his stunned mother.
The sharp sound of Mateo’s piercing infant cries filled the room, breaking the violent spell. Tomas turned his back on his fallen mother, his heart hammering against his ribs as he rushed toward the bassinet to protect his crying child.
On the floor, Elena sat shivering, sobbing hysterically as she reached out toward her husband. Tomas lowered his hands, balancing his urge to comfort his traumatized wife with his desperation to lift his son into his arms.
Unnoticed by either of them, Victoria pushed herself up from the base of the bookcase. Her platinum hair was disheveled, her emerald blazer scuffed, and her eyes burned with psychotic rage. Her fingers brushed against the bottom display shelf, closing around the cold, heavy stem of an antique brass candelabra holding three lit, flickering candles.
She didn’t hesitate.
Leaping up from behind, Victoria brought the heavy brass weapon down with all her strength against Tomas’s upper back. The heavy impact made a sickening thud, and Tomas let out a groan of agony, collapsing to his knees as the breath was driven from his lungs.
Panic instantly seized Victoria as she realized what she had done. She dropped the heavy metal candelabra and turned, fleeing toward the exit in blind terror.
The fallen candelabra landed heavily on the hand-woven terracotta rug. In a fraction of a second, the exposed flames caught the dry fabric. A loud WHOOSH of ignition echoed through the living room as bright, violent flames ignited the rug and immediately climbed the dark mahogany wood paneling behind it. Thick, dark smoke began billing rapidly toward the high ceiling, transforming the pristine penthouse into an inferno within seconds.
«Curse this inferno! What damnation!» Victoria shrieked, her manic fury turning into absolute panic as she glanced back over her shoulder at the rapidly spreading fire.
Driven by raw survival instinct, her designer shoes thudded frantically against the marble as she scrambled toward the main penthouse exit. She burst through the entryway corridor, thick grey smoke pouring out behind her as she escaped into the outer hallway.
Standing in the safety of the corridor, Victoria turned her head back in horror. Through the glass and doorway, she watched orange flames swallow the living room, threatening to incinerate everything—and everyone—inside.
Inside the blazing room, choked by rising smoke and surrounded by roaring fire, Elena crawled desperately on her hands and knees toward the bassinet. She pulled her crying infant out of the cradle and pulled him tightly against her chest, her body trembling uncontrollably.
Glowing orange light flickered across her tear-stained face as she looked toward her husband’s motionless body lying just feet away, the flames closing in around them both.
Then, through the roar of the fire, Elena felt something small and hard tucked inside the pocket of her baby’s pastel-blue swaddle—a small, silver flash drive she had never seen before, wrapped in a note written in Tomas’s handwriting: If I don’t survive tonight, do not trust the police.
