The blue light pulsed like a dying heart, casting rhythmic neon shadows across the splinters scattered over the hardwood. Julian threw his arms up a fraction of a second before the beast hit him, the Doberman’s massive weight slamming into his chest and driving him backward into the glass coffee table. The safety glass shattered with a deafening crash, showering the velvet sofa in razor-sharp ice.

Julian screamed as the dog’s jaws locked around his forearm, teeth tearing through his midnight-blue denim shirt into flesh. He thrashed violently on the mound of broken glass, punching the dog’s ribs with his free fist, but the animal was relentless, its guttural growls shaking the entire living room.

«Enough!» Tariq’s voice rang out, sharp and absolute.

The dog instantly unclamped its jaws, stepping back with a low, vibrating rumble in its chest, its muzzle dripping crimson onto the polished floor. Julian curled into a ball on the glass, clutching his bloody arm, his breathing ragged and shallow as his eyes darted in sheer terror toward the broken doorframe.

Elena gasped, dragging herself up against the emerald velvet cushions, her eyes fixed on the small transmitter beneath the shattered latch. Her chest rose and fell in panicked bursts as she looked from the flashing blue LED to her father’s stoic face.

«You…» Elena’s voice was barely a whisper, thick with shock. «You had the key code?»

Tariq didn’t answer her right away. He stepped fully into the penthouse, his heavy boots crunching over the glass fragments. He reached down and scooped up the sobbing two-year-old Maya into his left arm, tucking his granddaughter tightly against his chest while his dark eyes remained locked on Julian bleeding on the floor.

«I gave him the bypass code three years ago, Elena,» Tariq said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. «The day you married him.»

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. She pressed both hands against her swollen belly, her mind spinning into a sickening spiral. «What are you talking about? You hated him! You warned me about him!»

«I warned you so you wouldn’t look too closely at why he was really here,» Tariq replied, taking another deliberate step toward Julian. He nudged a piece of broken glass aside with the toe of his leather boot. «Julian didn’t infiltrate my empire. I brought him into it. He was supposed to be my scapegoat when the federal auditors came knocking.»

Julian let out a bitter, blood-choked laugh from the floor, wiping his mouth with the back of his uninjured hand. «You lying bastard…» he hissed, his amber eyes burning with hatred as he looked up at his father-in-law. «Tell her the rest, Tariq! Tell her who actually signed that ledger!»

Elena froze. Her eyes darted from Julian’s bloody frame to the open ledger sitting untouched on the intact corner of the marble hearth. The final signature—the bold, sweeping strokes she would recognize anywhere—belonged to her dead brother, Leo.

«Leo didn’t sign that under duress,» Julian choked out, wincing as he pushed himself up onto one elbow, glass digging into his palm. «He signed it because he was running the offshore network with your father! Your brother didn’t die in a car crash because I tampered with his brakes, Elena! He died because he was trying to run away from HIM!»

«Shut your mouth!» Tariq roared, his hand instantly reaching into his inner jacket pocket.

Before Tariq could pull whatever was hidden in his coat, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the hallway behind him.

The low, hum of the penthouse elevator chimed softly. The double doors slid open into the foyer, revealing a shadowy figure holding a sleek, silenced pistol aimed directly at the back of Tariq’s head.

«Nobody move,» a woman’s cold, crisp voice commanded from the shadows of the entrance.

Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

Stepping into the warm afternoon sunlight, wearing a sharp charcoal-grey tailored suit, was a woman who looked almost identical to Elena—except for the jagged scar running from her cheekbone to her jawline.

It was Sophia. The sister Elena was told had died at birth twenty-six years ago.

Maya stopped crying instantly, staring wide-eyed at the stranger who possessed her mother’s face.

«Drop the dog leash, Father,» Sophia said, her voice dripping with ice as she kept the gun leveled at Tariq’s skull. «And put my niece down slowly.»

Tariq’s jaw tightened, his posture going completely rigid. He didn’t drop the dog leash, but his knuckles turned white around the tactical rope. «You were supposed to be in Zurich,» he muttered, the first hint of genuine unease cracking his stony facade.

«And miss the family reunion?» Sophia smiled, though her dark eyes remained utterly lifeless. She shifted her gaze slightly toward the floor where Julian lay bleeding. «You did well, Julian. The transmitter worked perfectly.»

Elena felt the air leave her lungs completely. She looked at Julian, then at Sophia, the horrific realization hitting her like a physical blow. Julian hadn’t just been working against her family—he had been working with a ghost.

«You knew?» Elena whispered, looking down at Julian with absolute disgust and betrayal. «The entire time… you were sleeping in my bed, touching my stomach, while conspiring with… with her?»

Julian didn’t look at Elena. He looked at Sophia, a strange, desperate panic flashing across his face. «Sophia, shoot him! He’s going to kill us both!»

«Shut up, Julian,» Sophia snapped without looking at him. «You were a useful key to get past the penthouse security, but your incompetence almost ruined everything. You weren’t supposed to hit her.»

Sophia’s finger tightened on the trigger of the silenced firearm.

Suddenly, a loud, wet gasp tore through the room.

Elena doubled over on the velvet sectional, a agonizing contraction seizing her body with brutal force. A sharp, clear puddle splashed onto the dark hardwood beneath her dress.

Her water had just broken.

«Father…» Elena sobbed, clutching her belly as another violent wave of pain hit her, her knuckles turning blue as she squeezed the couch cushion. «The baby… something’s wrong…»

Tariq’s stoic expression shattered into pure panic. «Elena!» He instinctively turned toward his daughter, dropping his guard for a fraction of a second.

Pfft. Pfft.

Two suppressed gunshots cut through the air.

Tariq reeled backward, a bright red stain instantly blooming across his shoulder. He stumbled against the wall, dropping Maya to the floor as the heavy Doberman let out a wild, confused whine.

At the exact same moment, the digital panel on the wall near the elevator erupted into a chaotic string of red error codes. The floor-to-ceiling smart glass windows began to slide down automatically, plunging the sunlit penthouse into sudden, blinding darkness as the heavy iron storm shutters sealed them all inside.

From the dark corners of the sealed room, a mechanized electronic voice echoed through the hidden ceiling speakers: Emergency Containment Protocol Activated. Gas deployment in sixty seconds.
